Moonstone

Moonstone is a variety of feldspar — one of the most common minerals in the earth’s crust, yet capable of something uncommon. When alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspar stack in thin sheets, light scatters between them in a phenomenon called adularescence: a soft, floating glow that moves across the stone as it turns. The finest moonstone comes from Sri Lanka, where gem-quality material has been mined for centuries. India, Myanmar, and Madagascar are also significant sources.

The surface appears to hold light from inside, shifting between silver, blue, and cream. Some stones show a strong blue flash; others glow like fog over still water.
