December Birthstone
Topaz in its pure form is colorless. Blue topaz receives its color from irradiation — either naturally from surrounding rock over geological time, or through controlled treatment. It is an aluminum silicate fluoride hydroxide, one of the hardest silicate minerals. Brazil is the primary source of fine topaz globally. Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Russia also yield significant material. The blue ranges from pale sky — almost clear — to a deep London Blue with grey-green undertone.
It is clean, direct, and unsentimental. The December-born often have this quality: a clarity of intention, a comfort in cold, an ability to hold themselves together in winter. Blue topaz wears simply and well. It doesn't try too hard — which is exactly its appeal.
Three ways to read this month: turquoise (Modern), blue zircon (Planetary), tanzanite (Ancient). Three different stones, three different traditions. We work with what we have — December at Goldlip is blue topaz: the clearest blue of winter, no mythology required.
