Kyanite

Kyanite

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral with an unusual property: its hardness varies depending on direction. Along the crystal's length it registers around 4.5 on the Mohs scale; across it, closer to 7. This anisotropy — the same mineral behaving differently depending on orientation — is a product of how its atoms bond in different directions. Kyanite forms in metamorphic rock under high pressure and moderate temperature, typically in mountain belts where continental plates have collided. Nepal, Brazil, Kenya, and the Swiss Alps are significant sources. The name derives from the Greek word for blue.

Deep, consistent blue — often with a silky surface sheen and parallel striations running along the crystal's length that catch light differently as the stone moves. It is a direct and precise stone, one that holds its character without variation. For people who are reliable in that way: clear in what they are, unchanged by context. It wears well in any setting and does not require explanation.
