Dendritic

Dendritic

Dendritic stones take their name from the Greek dendron — tree. The branching patterns inside them are not surface decoration but mineral growth: manganese or iron oxide, carried by groundwater through microscopic fractures in chalcedony or agate, depositing slowly over thousands of years. The result is a two-dimensional image embedded within the stone itself, sharp against a pale grey or cream base.

Most dendritic material is found in sedimentary deposits across India, Brazil, Madagascar, and the American Southwest. Each stone forms independently, with no two sharing the same pattern — the branching follows the path the mineral took, nothing more.

The surface is smooth and semi-translucent. The dendrite pattern sits beneath it like an ink drawing sealed in glass: precise, permanent, unrepeatable. Pieces range from sparse single lines to dense compositions that fill the entire face of the stone.

A stone for people drawn to things that carry evidence of process — where the mark left behind is the point.
